Match report A good result, nearly a victory but a winning draw, following the poor start. Due to traffic problems there was only half the team there at 12.50 and having won the toss Tony S had no option than to bat. Luckily, everyone had arrived by 1.00. But we soon found ourselves 15 for 3 in the fifth over with Arun S (1), last week's run-maker, Buddika Senerath (5) and Tony S (1) all out, it was left to Ali Whitehead (51) and Pete Dumbarton (28) to steady things down and build a partnership, which they did. They put on 73 until just after making his fifty Ali W was caught at mid off trying to go over the top. In came Guy F (9), making a return after 3 years away and looking solid until he miscued one and was caught. We were now 97 for 5 which soon to become 102 for 6 as Stuart S (20) smashed one direct to a fielder and called Pete D for a single, only for the fielder to have a direct hit on the stumps at Pete D's end catching him short of his ground. Stuart was to make up for it as he dispatched the opening bowler for 2 fours and a six out of the ground in one over. He was out shortly after trying the same thing. Arul kept the scoring going but once he was out the innings soon ended with the score on 138.
The umpire insisted that we go out before tea so we had 9 overs at the Witney openers, which we made use of as Arul N trapped one of the openers LBW for 7. The other opener was very cautious in his approach blocking most balls. With one over to go Mo M was brought into the attack and delivered with a maiden. After tea the same pair Arul N and Mo M continued with some steady bowling. Witney were going at 3 an over and had reached 37 when Pete D brilliantly caught Witney's number 3 off of Mo's bowling. After Arul had grabbed his second wicket he finished his spell of 11 overs with 2 for 27 to be replaced by Derek P who picked up a wicket with his first ball, the batsman spooning a catch to Stuart S at leg slip. Wickets continued to fall at an average of every 10 runs and so Witney were soon 8 down in thirty six over needing another 47 for victory. But they made no attempt to get the runs and despite the bowlers best efforts the game peetered out into a draw.
