Kimble Cricket Club Lost

Match report Preparation is key to a good performance and players prepare in many different ways. Some like a quiet Friday night in. Others prefer to go out and have a few drinks and finish the night at a night club where they throw a few shapes in the hope that they are still feeling the rhythm when they bat the next day (or in some cases the same day) like the Jamaican bob sleigh team. One player prefers a romantic stroll down Parton Road in Aylesbury arm in arm with his wife at 7.49. She was hanging on his every word as he waxed lyrical about how he was going to bat the following day. Perhaps they had some fish and chips or maybe a Chinese? Who knows whose preparation is the right one – only time will tell.

After losing the toss on a hot day they asked us to bat. Was it a decision their skipper was to regret? Arun and Bob put on 72 for the first wicket. If we put on 72 for each wicket , a score of 720 may just be enough to allow Alex Ross to bowl for the 2nd team again if he does a Frank Sinatra and comes out of his retirement from cricket.

The 2nd team were re-enforced this week by the presence by Jimmy Deans favourite “Big Bad John” which was released in 1961, also the year I was born although the way I missed a catch on Sunday (and also Saturday) one or two players may have wished I had not. John increased the score rate and following his untimely dismissal for 27 we spent the rest of the innings scoring at an American Tango Style Basic scoring rate. Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick, Slow for non fans of Strictly Come Dancing. Secretary Bob anchored the innings with a fluent 58 not out as we finished with a score of 194 for 8 which was more than double the score we got at their ground.

We all now looked forward to tea prepared by Ali who arrived at the ground at 11.43. Yes, I had to double check the time.

When we played at Oxford Downs earlier in the season we did not play at their normal ground and unfortunately there was no water available for tea. Before the game I filled the urn with water, but unfortunately I turned it up too high and by the time tea time had arrived, the water had evaporated – revenge is sweet unlike the tea.

Qxford Downs 3rds started off at a tremendous rate as if they were in a hurry to get home for some unknown reason. Once John removed their opening bat Angus (not sure if he was of the Aberdeen Angus Steak house clan) the rate reduced as we bowled our way back into the game. With two overs remaining they required 22 which appears to have been prominent number for some Kimble players this season. They scored the required runs with two balls and three wickets remaining. Although we lost, it was possibly our best game of the season.

Back to preparation, who was strolling down Parton Road? It was Secretary Bob who anchored the innings with 58 no off 116 balls in 166 minutes. He played 86 dot balls and I understand that he was disappointed that it was not 87 as Pete Spinks made him run a single when he hit the ball towards the boundary by mistake. I expect it will be gridlock on the path of Parton Road this week with Kimble players as we prepare for our final league game of the season.
